The light, medium and dark fabrics can be from one color family. For instance, my first sample is from the brown/gold family. My light is a light gold. My medium is a medium brown with a print that has gold in it. My dark is dark brown. The accent is from a color family close to the main fabric family. If you are looking at a color wheel, you would want to stay within the families to the right and the left. You could jump over two families. I picked an orangey brown.
Another way this might be done is from themed fabric. A patriotic theme is red, white and blue. I could pick a white for the light. I could pick a medium blue and a dark blue to round it out. I would use the red as my accent.
Another themed fabric possibility would be autumn. You might pick a yellow for your light, a red orange for your medium and a dark green for your dark. Your accent could be orange or burgundy.
Holiday themes often work well for mysteries. Of course, you can go traditional with a medium focus fabric. Pick you other colors from colors in your focus fabric.
Large prints will not work in this quilt. You should be pleased with any 2" of fabric that you see. Make sure that it will still maintain its value. No directional fabrics - they will NOT work.
